Praxis, Meerkats, TV and Natasha StottDespoja

Just to keep in touch with good old Sydney town, I read the SMH every morning (c'mon, a few guilty pleasures in this age of computers!), and today I found this very scary article:

Animal kingdom

After last week's topic on the plot by the machines to overthrow us, Frankenstein turned his mind to another threat to the dominance of Homo sapiens on Earth – those damnable meerkats.
Those of you who watch the weekly documentary Meerkat Manor know what ol' Frank is on about. Those of you who don't should tune in, if only to study those who may one day be our masters.
They are remarkable creatures, intelligent, group-oriented and capable of much guile. Sure, at the moment they only use their smarts to eat their own young, catch beetles and de-flea each other. But how long will it be until these agile little mammals evolve to the point where they can manufacture semiautomatic rifles and body armour?
A matter of years, perhaps months, obviously. This is why Frankenstein is holed up in his laboratory, manufacturing a race of super-mongooses with lasers for eyes that will defend me from the inevitable invasion. But that's my plan, and you can't have it.
Once humanity wears itself out and succumbs to the weakness of old age, what do you think will be the next dominant species on Earth? If, for some unthinkable reason, neither the machines nor the meerkat (or my laser mongooses, if they get out of control) succeed in their violent uprisings, what will be the power-hungry species to step up to the plate and how will they evolve to make this possible?

Well, ladies and gents, I am here to tell you that I am (or was) among the legions of devoted watchers of Meerkat Manor (Wiccie, have you been taping this and the other biggie, Boston Legal, for me? Please say "Yes", please!) and I am very very very disappointed.
When I left Australia, most of the Meerkats were alive and going strong, now I find they've been eating their young. Who was it? Not Tosca? Not after all she's been through, devotedly nursing Shakespeare back to good health. This is BAD!!!!

A person turns their backs for five seconds, the Meerkats go wild, the regular cat learns to talk but only to other people, and Natasha is rushed to hospital. * Sigh*. Can't leave them by themselves for a single minute.

Poor Natasha ...

Democrats Senator Natasha Stott Despoja has had emergency surgery and will be absent from public duties and Parliament for up to three weeks due to ill health, her office said today.

Senator Stott Despoja's office said in a statement that she had "emergency surgery last night for an ectopic pregnancy and has been instructed to rest".

An ectopic pregnancy is where the egg develops outside the womb.

Her husband, Ian Smith, said in a statement: "We trust people appreciate the need for Natasha to make a swift recovery and therefore ask the media to respect her privacy."

Get well soon Natasha, our country needs you!

Meanwhile, Praxis is STILL refusing to come to the phone, although she is apparently keeping everyone highly amused with her constant chatter. The truth is, as we all know, she knows she doesn't HAVE to talk while I'm there - I've got the whole talking thing covered!

Nevertheless, I won't give up on her just yet, because she left me a gift. OK, as far as gifts go it's not that special in human terms, but in your basic cat it rates right up there ... PS, don't look down if squeamish or overly imaginitive.

And thank you Praxis. Good cat. No need to respond, I know you love me big lizards. Kiss kiss.
